Review: G.I. Joe Classified Series Shipwreck

Hasbro continues to play catchup with its solicited G.I. Joe Classified figures. With the Army and the Marines already having representation, it is now the Navy’s turn to have an updated G.I. Joe figure. So the Classified Series now presents the Joe’s resident salty seadog, Shipwreck.

Shipwreck first appeared in the Real American Hero line back in 1985. CPO Hector Delgato grew up around the Navy and joined at a young age. With his distinctive career, he was the perfect sailor to join the G.I. Joe team. Shipwreck regularly appeared in the G.I Joe cartoon and had 18 other figures of him released between 1994 and 2015.

The Classified Shipwreck’s design definitely takes its cues from the original design. Shipwreck is a brown-haired male with a brown beard. He is wearing a white sailor’s cap. His uniform consists of a light blue shirt with the sleeves rolled up and dark blue pants. His shirt is open at the top, showing off some chest hair. He has a black belt with a holster, a leg holster strapped to his right leg, black gloves, and black boots.

Polly’s back!

For articulation, his head is on a dumbbell joint through the neck, with unhindered movement up, down and all around. He has butterfly joints at the shoulders, with the arms on ball joints with an upper arm cut, double elbows and rotation and a hinge at the wrists. There is an ab crunch in the torso and a waist swivel. The legs are on the drop-down pins with an upper thigh swivel, double knees a boot swivel and rocker ankles.

Percussion Pistol
Side pistol and hook. Check out that head of hair!

His accessories include a sculpted, coiled rope that he can wear over his torso. There is a silver hook that can be attached to the rope. He has two weapons; ad silver and black percussion pistol and a black side-arm pistol. His hat is on a removable hair piece and there is an alternate hair without the hat. Finally, like the original ARAH figure, Shipwreck comes with his parrot. The bird is not articulated and has a peg on a foot, so you plug him into a hole on the rope or on Shipwreck’s left wrist.

The Rope goes over his chest, Polly can plug into the knot on top.

Shipwreck is a good example of the Classified series recreating the classic look while tweaking and modernizing it. While Shipwreck’s uniform is a bit dated, they got rid of the bell bottoms at least. The alternate, uncovered hair gives him a new look, but he is still recognizable. Whatever QC issues the G.I. Joe team had with the previous wave don’t seem to have affected this figure. The paint and face printing is great and the figure is solid. I like the figure and was a fan of the original one, but I still would like to see Shipwreck in one of his more modern designs (sweater and wool cap), though we are much more likely to get a Tiger Force version.

“Yeah, but have you ever been with a sailor with a parrot, though?”
