Review: DC Multiverse McFarlane Collector Edition Captain Carrot

Funny animals and comics have been connected since the beginning of the medium. The Scrooge McDuck books have to be some of the most influential, as his portrayal informed later cartoon adaptations of the characters. There were also funny animal superheroes, such as Hoppy the Marvel Bunny, an anthropomorphic counterpart to the original Captain Marvel. Another such comic was Captain Carrot and his Amazing Zoo Crew, a short-lived series but fondly remembered by many. Recently, they have resurfaced in the pages of DC’s comics, which is where we get this version of Captain Carrot in the DC Multiverse McFarlane Collectors Editon series.

Rodney Rabbit was an illustrator working in Gnu York in the Earth 26 Universe. When he eats his cosmic carrots, he gains superpowers and defends his world, and sometimes the multiverse, as Captain Carrot.

“It is I, Captain Carrot!”

Captain Carrot is presented in his “realistic’ look that has been used since The Multiversity (2014) miniseries. He is a humanoid rabbit in a red mask with white fur on the exposed part of his face. His suit is yellow and red with a yellow “c” with a carrot on the front. He has a red cape, red boots and red gloves, with carrot designs on the gloves. He also has carrot-shaped clasps on his shoulders for his cape.

“Now THAT’S a handsome rabbit!”

For articulation, his head is on a ball joint and can rotate freely, but only has limited tilt and up-and-down movement. His arms are on butterfly joints at the shoulders, with a bicep swivel, double elbows and ball joints at the wrists. He has both a mid-torso joint and a waist swivel. His legs are on a hinge joint, with double knees and ball joints at the ankles.

Thumbs up!

For accessories, Captain Carrot comes with multiple hands. Besides the trigger/gripping hands on the figure, he has a set of open hands, a left-pointing hand and a right hand with the thumb up. He comes with the clear flight stand we’ve seen many times. Like all of the McFarlane Collection Editions, he comes with a trading card featuring comic book artwork on the front and a bio on the back, and a card holder to display it in.

Captain Carrot is one of those obscure characters that you thought you would never see again in the comics, let alone as a toy. Writer Grant Morrison’s willingness to include this character in his many multiverse-spanning stories restored him to the mainstream and he continues to be part of the multiversal Justice League Incarnate. While I doubt that we will see any of his fellow Zoo Crew members, his inclusion is a good sign the DC Multiverse is willing to give the smaller characters their due.

The DC Multiverse McFarlane Collector Edition Captain Carrot is available now. Check online for availability.
